When you installed the componet, I am assuming you did through the joomal backend. Are you FTP settings setup inside the gernal joomla config settings?

Alot of people tend to overlook that step, and it casues the group/owner to become "unknown".

you have a problem configuring your ftp if you can not change the rights of folders and subfolders you can do for you.
